WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This warm weather has been quite the treat. For many it makes it sort of hard to believe it is winter out and that is the same case for plants around the area.
“We got some daffodils coming up and the tulips won’t be too far behind him if the temperatures stay like they are,” Airlie Gardens Landscape Technician Gregg Sales said.
He said we should not see purple and pink azaleas until April, but they are seen on the grounds today.
“Not typical, last year was pretty early,” he said. “We had some in February.”
Sales says don’t worry, “there will be plenty to go through until the Spring.”
Cold weather will happen sooner than later, but until then Sales says just take in the view.
“They typically get hit by the frost and so once a frost hits them the flowers turn brown so they not as pretty so what we have right now is a really nice showing of the camellias,” said Sales.
With warm and wet weather also comes a pesky problem, something you have probably noticed too.
He says, “The mosquitoes are loving this temperatures. We still have the bug spray on. It’s been a problem.”
Sales says the warmer temperatures are also bringing in the crowds.
“We have a lot more guests,” said Sales. “Usually December and January are kind of slow for us as far as guests are concerned during the day, but today is a beautiful day and we have a lot of guests out enjoying the weather.”
Cold weather is on the way for the weekend so if you have outdoor plants, you can cover them with plastic or a blanket or if possible bring them inside.
